Canada is falling behind on its international aid commitments as a percentage of Gross National Income. If we do not change course, Canada will have its lowest aid commitment in the last half-century.

In 2015 Prime Minister Trudeau announced to the world that Canada is back, and we are here to help. Right now, the federal government is in the final stages of preparing the 2017 Budget. Crossroads International has submitted a letter to the Ministers of Finance, Foreign Affairs, and International Development asking them to invest in advancing women’s rights and poverty reduction globally. You may read that letter here.

Please join Canadians across the country to urge the government to deliver #MoreCanada. Take these three simple actions to help us get Canada #BackonTrack with its international aid contributions.

1. Contact your MP

Phone calls and visits make a bigger impact, but emails are helpful too. Please contact your MP and tell them:
  • You favour an immediate, modest increase in international aid, and a long-term plan to make Canada a leader in global aid.
  • Canada can lead in advancing women’s equality and alleviating poverty around the world.
  • When the federal government fulfills its global aid responsibilities, you feel proud and know it is the right thing to do.
  • You care about Canada’s role in the world.
  • If you have volunteered overseas, thank them for their support and let them know the impact.
  • You can commend them for strong words, bold ideas, and fresh approach to international development, and their stated commitment to the advancement of women’s rights and ask them to make sure they have the funds allocated to deliver.
  • Ask to receive the report from the International Assistance Review.

2. Speak out on social media

Tweet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other government leaders, for example:

  • Dear @JustinTrudeau, with a new investment in foreign aid, Canada can truly be a global leader on women's rights. #BackonTrack #cdnpoli
  • Dear @Bill_Morneau, with a new investment in foreign aid, Canada can truly be a global leader on women's rights. #BackonTrack #cdnpoli
  • Dear @mclaudebibeau, with a new investment in foreign aid, Canada can truly be a global leader on women's rights. #BackonTrack #cdnpoli

Post the following message on Facebook:

I am calling on my government to get #BackonTrack with its global aid. A recent report by Global Canada documents how our country has fallen behind on international aid. Compared to other G7 and other similarly sized countries, Canada is lagging on budgetary commitments as a share of GNI. The report predicts that Canada’s failure to invest could cost millions of lives.

Now, more than ever, the world needs #MoreCanada. With modest investments, Canada can advance the rights of women and girls, prevent gender-based violence, enhance human rights, and alleviate poverty around the world. These issues are important for me. I urge you to take action too, e-mail or call your MP today.

3. Submit a Letter to the Editor of your local newspaper with a copy to your local MP

A sample letter is below. Your local newspaper will have information on submitting a Letter to the Editor.

Dear Editor,

A recent report by Global Canada documents how our country has fallen behind on international aid. Compared to other G7 and other similarly sized countries, Canada is lagging on budgetary commitments as a share of GNI. The report predicts that Canada’s failure to invest could cost millions of lives.

Now, more than ever, the world needs more Canada. With modest investments, Canada can advance the rights of women and girls, prevent gender-based violence, enhance human rights, and alleviate poverty around the world.
These issues are important for me. I urge you, my Member of Parliament and all members of the community to advocate for Canada to get back on track and fulfill its global aid responsibilities. It is simply the right thing to do.
