Whether you are planning a celebrity golf tournament, a dinner party or a bake sale in your school, no event is too big or too small.  Below you will find information to help you plan and execute a successful event to benefit Crossroads International.

Once you have decided on the event, please don’t forget to register your event by filling out the Event Proposal Form.


Event Ideas

    • Girl 2 Girl Club – bring together motivated friends and families in a club dedicated to raising $10,000 to launch a girls’ empowerment club in Swaziland.
    • Club 2 Club – Transform your social club into a club with purpose!  At your Dinner Club, Wine Club, Book Club, Running Club, profile literature, products, cusine or drinks from an African country or Bolivia, or simply propose a theme for discussion related to Crossroads' work.
    • Speakers series – recruit a compelling speaker on a topic of interest and donate proceeds from ticket sales to Crossroads
    • Give a Day – You can make an individual donation, or you can join with your friends, family and co-workers and start your own Give a Day campaign where make a donation equivalent to one day’s pay.   If you lead a team, consider leading the way! Make sure you provide some incentive and rewards such as Give a Day Dress Down Day.
    • Sales – You can donate all part of the proceeds from your garage sale, bake sale, or designer clothing sale to Crossroads, and your gift will be tax-deductible.


  • Karma Classes – many yoga studios have weekly or monthly karma classes where proceeds are donated to charity. Speak to your club about a karma class to benefit Crossroads.
  • Marathon – running in a charity marathon? Consider designating Crossroads as your charity.  Solicit sponsors before the run!


Organizing Your Event

Before you begin, there are some important things to consider:

  • What is your fundraising goal?
  • How much work/hours are you/your committee prepared to take on?
  • Do I need a committee to help me reach my target audience and my goal?
  • Will the costs of putting on the event be proportional to the amount raised?
  • Am I asking for donations or am I selling tickets to an event?
  • Would my event be attractive to corporate sponsors?
  • What is the best venue, date, time of day, and length of time for the event?
  • Do I need an invitation and/or publicity/promotion plan?
  • Do I have a system to track rsvps, ticket sales and donations?
  • Do I have a system to collect the money and contact information from donors and participants to ensure acknowledgment and receipting is possible?
  • Have I prepared a thank you letter to sponsors, guests and volunteers to let them know the results and the difference their participation has made?
  • Check with Crossroads resource development staff to determine a plan for tax receipts, if applicable. 


How Can We Help You?

We are thrilled that you have chosen to raise funds for Crossroads and we are eager to support you in planning your event. You are an important part of the fundraising team. 

Crossroads International can provide the following assistance once your event has been approved:

  • Advice and expertise on event planning
  • A Crossroads representative may be available to accept a cheque at your event
  • Issue tax receipts if applicable
  • Art work and approval of the Crossroads International name and/or logo
  • Support letter that validates the authenticity of your event


Crossroads International cannot provide the following:

  • Funding or reimbursement for event expenses
  • Mail and/or e-mail lists such as donor lists
  • Guaranteed attendance of staff or volunteers at your event
  • Application for gaming licenses, e.g., bingos or raffles
  • Prizes, auction items, awards


Important to Note:

  • You must have permission to use the Crossroads International name and/or logo
  • Money raised must be received within 60 days of the event
  • Tax receipt information (if you are approved to issue receipts) must be received within 60 days of the event
  • Volunteer event organizer will obtain all necessary permits, licenses and insurance
  • Volunteer event organizer agrees to adhere to all receipting policies as outlined in the tax receipting section and by the Canada Revenue Agency
  • Crossroads reserves the right to withdraw the use of its name at any time and will not assume any costs that may be involved in doing so
  • If the event is cancelled, the event organizer agrees to contact Crossroads at least one day prior to the event
  • Crossroads International will not assume any legal or financial liability
  • Crossroads International is not responsible for any damage, accidents to persons or property


Tax Receipts

Crossroads International is committed to following all rules and regulations regarding tax receipting set out by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA). This is important to protect our donor’s rights and our organization’s charitable status. It is very important that you understand the rules about tax receipts BEFORE you plan your event. The requirements for receipting are extensive and time consuming. You may decide, in the end, that if only a small tax receipt can be issued, it may be better not to offer them at all.

It is your responsibility to communicate decisions surrounding tax receipting to the participants of the event, so please be sure you have discussed your situation in detail with a Crossroads International staff member and that you are clear about what you can and cannot offer.
