BACKGROUND


Crossroads International is an international development organization that is working towards reducing poverty and increasing women’s rights around the world. Working with local partners supported by hundreds of volunteers each year, Crossroads leverages expertise and resources, North and South, required to help people overcome poverty and assert their human rights.

 

Based in Swaziland, Swaziland Fair TradeSWIFT – has entered a partnership with Crossorads since 2015.  SWIFT is composed of companies who produce high quality, high design handcraft in Swaziland. SWIFT ensures each company aligns with the Principles of Fair Trade.  SWIFT is committed to helping its members and artisans to grow their businesses, by encouraging and helping to facilitate trade. SWIFT is constantly exploring new market access opportunities both locally and internationally, while promoting members with potential customers. SWIFT is committed to build a movement that promotes fair trade as business concept that supports justice in trade aimed at improving the livelihoods of producers and workers. SWIFT advocacy aims at raising awareness and influencing decision makers and power holders to make changes in the rules and practices of conventional international trade.

SWIFT has a clear mandate to advocate for Fair Trade standards yet we lack the capacity to undertake this. Our team is small and limited to project outcomes and activities. We require someone to help us create an advocacy programme as well as managing the current social media and other platforms. We would ideally request someone who can train the team so that we can have continuity after the volunteer has left us. We would like the volunteer to help create a social media strategy, content plan and action plan to advocate for other work SWIFT does as well as introducing an audience to Fair Trade

Mandate historical context:  Swaziland Fair Tarde represents 77 members ranging from Level 0 – who have a marketable product but are not as yet a formal business, Level 1 who are a registered company and have local domestic sales, Level 2 regional or international exporters with a minimum of ten staff and Level 3 large scale exporting companies with sales of more than one million Emalangeni (South African Rand)

Our mandate is training, trade and advocacy for our members as well as the promotion and advocacy of Fair Tarde principles.

One of the best ways to reach an international audience is a dedicated, well planned and well thought social media strategy which will elevate SWIFT’s reach.  The volunteer for this mandate was identified for this purpose during the capacity building planning.

 

POSITION DETAILS


Main responsibilities include: 

  • Research the current SWIFT social media presence and identify the needs and gaps
  • With the help of the Country Director develop a social media content plan.
  • Gather and create the SWIFT photo library
  • Train the 3 business development managers to enable them to run social media campaigns
  • Assist with a Global Giving campaign SWIFT members have basic knowledge and use of social media and basic knowledge of traditional media interaction.
  • Update SWIFT internal and external communication plans
  • Train SWIFT staff on clear understanding and practical knowledge of strategic use of social media and social media campaigns
  • Train SWIFT members on basic knowledge and use of social media and basic knowledge of traditional media interaction.
  • Create a domestic press release system (how to write a press release) and assist with developing a content plan for the local media
  • Develop a social media hand book for continuity after the mandate is completed
  • Create a campaign for World Fair Trade Day
  • Assist with the marketing at the Bushfire Festival to spread the word on Fair Trade
  • Assist with the creation of new info graphics, banners and marketing materials for SWIFT 

Qualification criteria for selection include:

 

  • Degree in Communications, Marketing or other relevant field
  • Minimum 3 years work experience
  • Readiness to deal with change
  • Ability and willingness to work in rural areas and willingness to work in a non-Canadian socio-cultural and professional settings.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to other African/Middle Eastern countries
  • Graphics skills would be essential

Eligibility criteria:

 

  • Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • Must be 19 years and older
  • Willing to conduct fundraising and public engagement activities before, during and after the placement
  • In good physical and mental health (medical examination required)
  • THE VOLUNTEER NEEDS TO BRING THEIR OWN COMPUTER

Personalized support before, during and after the mandate provided by an experienced and welcoming team. The Crossroads' experience includes the following:

 

  • Daily living allowance (depending of the country of assignment)
  • Plane ticket and local transport
  • Medical insurance and vaccinations
  • Pre-departure training and re-orientation upon return
