Acclaimed writer and volunteer Lawrence Hill to help launch Crossroads International's 60th anniversary celebration on Parliament Hill on International Volunteer Day December 5th 2017

November 27, 2017

Ottawa, ON — Overseas volunteer and acclaimed author Lawrence Hill will be joining Crossroads International in celebrating International Volunteer Day on Parliament Hill on December 5th, 2017. Thousands of Canadians volunteer in the global south each year, working in partnership with local organizations to reduce poverty, strengthen women’s rights, and improve access to justice. Crossroads International, a leading Canadian volunteer cooperation agency, will also be launching its 60th anniversary celebrations during this lunchtime reception on Parliament Hill.

Joining Mr. Hill at the reception with Parliamentarians will be Crossroads International’s partners from Burkina Faso and Togo, along with Canadians with international volunteer experience. The reception will be held from 11:30 am - 1 pm in room 602 of Centre Block on Parliament Hill.

Recent developments in international aid policy underscore the role of volunteer cooperation, particularly when it comes to addressing women’s equality and security.

“The Canadian Feminist International Assistance Policy is a sea change in Canada’s International Development policy. We are proud partners in challenging gender inequality globally and we are happy to celebrate Crossroads’ 60th anniversary in this promising context,” said Carine Guidicelli, Executive Director of Crossroads International.

With the support of Global Affairs Canada and through its partnership with organizations in the Global South and Canadian volunteers, Crossroads International is able to make an impact:

  • Volunteers contributed 54,077 in-kind hours valued at more than $1.9 million in 2016-2017
  • 8,850 people in the South improved their income and more than 20,600 increased their capacity to access their rights in 2016-2017
